How to cut "where is my order?" tickets (WISMO) for good

"Where is my order?" is the most repeated question in ecommerce support. It's also the easiest to make disappear. Six fixes, in the order we'd do them.

Every support team knows the message. "Hi, where is my order?" Then the same question an hour later, from someone else, about a different order.

Industry estimates put WISMO, short for "where is my order", at 25 to 40% of inbound ecommerce support in a normal month, and 50 to 60% around peak sales (Karla). That's a big slice of your team's day spent copying tracking numbers.

The good news: almost none of it needs a person. Here are six fixes, in the order we'd do them.

1. Tell them before they ask

WISMO is an anxiety problem. The customer paid, then heard nothing. Every silent day makes them more likely to write in.

Send updates at the moments that matter: confirmed, shipped, out for delivery, delivered. Send them where customers actually look. For most shoppers that's WhatsApp or SMS, not an email in the promotions tab. We've written ready-to-use WhatsApp templates for each one.

2. Give a delivery date, not a status

"In transit" means nothing to a customer. "Arriving Thursday" means everything. Show an expected delivery date at checkout, in the confirmation, and in every update after.

If you can't predict exact days, give an honest range. A customer told "Tuesday to Thursday" doesn't write in on Monday.

3. Warn them about delays first

The angriest WISMO tickets come from delays the brand knew about and didn't mention. When a parcel is stuck, held at a hub or past its date, message the customer before they notice: what happened, the new date, and how to reach you.

A delay message costs one notification. The ticket it prevents costs a support reply, sometimes a refund, and often a review.

4. Let them ask in chat, and answer instantly

Some customers will always ask. Make the answer instant. When "where's my order?" arrives on WhatsApp or Instagram, the reply should come back in seconds, with live status, the courier, the expected date and a tracking link.

This is the best place for automation in all of ecommerce support. The question is the same every time, the answer lives in your order data, and nobody wants to wait for it.

5. Keep the conversation two-way

A tracking page answers "where". It can't answer "can you deliver Saturday instead?", "I'm not home, can a neighbor take it?" or "it says delivered but I don't have it."

Updates should arrive in a chat the customer can reply to. Routine questions get answered on the spot. Real problems, like a missing parcel or damage, go straight to your team with the order and the chat history attached.

6. Fix the root causes you can see

Look at your WISMO tickets once a month and sort them:

  • One courier or region shows up again and again. Talk to your logistics partner, or route around them.
  • Questions spike on day three. Your delivery promise is too optimistic. Adjust what you show at checkout.
  • Customers ask before the order has shipped. Your dispatch is slow, or your "order confirmed" message didn't set expectations.

What good looks like

When this works, "where is my order?" stops being a ticket. Customers get updates before they wonder. When they do ask, they get an answer in seconds, and your team only sees the parcels that are actually in trouble.
